CRASHBOARD (education / entertainment, NOT financial advice)

What's breaking,
and how bad it's been before.

Thirty-four indicators of financial stress, drawn from eight United States government sources, updated three times every weekday and ranked against twenty-eight years. An app for iPhone and iPad.

The dashboard, explained

Crashboard on iPad. A verdict of Elevated stress, a panel of global
stress by region, and two readings -- Conditions Now at plus 0.109
and Conditions Ahead at minus 0.192 -- each on a scale marked in
standard deviations, over per-indicator contribution panels and
                    daily history back to 1998.

Two readings

Conditions Now

Stress visible in the system today: credit spreads, bank failures, volatility, funding pressure.

Conditions Ahead

What is building underneath: the yield curve, issuance appetite, positioning, what assets cost.

And where in the world it sits

A third reading, free to everyone: the Office of Financial Research's global stress index, split into the United States, other advanced economies and emerging markets. Each is ranked against its own record rather than against the others — emerging markets swings about a fifth as wide as the United States, so the raw figures are not comparable and the ranks are.

The colour is a rank, not a verdict

The background runs from deep red to deep green, ranked against every day since 1998. It follows the Conditions Ahead reading — the same number the headline names — so the colour and the verdict can never disagree with each other, though either may disagree with the present.

Where the data comes from

All data comes from United States government sources in the public domain, or from sources that explicitly permit redistribution. No licensed market data is used or republished. They publish on their own schedules, noted below: a reading is never fresher than its slowest input, and the app carries how stale each indicator is into the weight it is given.

What it costs

Conditions Now is free, and stays free — the reading, every indicator behind it, the world panel, and the whole twenty-eight-year record of it.

A subscription of $29.99 a year unlocks Conditions Ahead: the reading itself, every indicator that moved it, and its history beside the present one. The verdict at the top of the screen and the colour behind it come from the forward lens and are free to everyone. Prices in other regions are set by Apple's equivalent tier. The subscription renews annually unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends, and is managed in your Apple Account settings.

Purchases are handled entirely by Apple. There is no account to create and nothing to sign in to.

Important

The readings are one opinionated model built from public data. That data may be delayed, revised, incomplete or wrong, and the model may be wrong even when the data is right. The readings describe conditions as they are measured now and rank them against the record. Past readings are not indicative of future results, and no reading is a forecast.
